Hair How-To: Twisted Tiara

Hola hola hola!  It's Caroline.  I'm currently in the process of growing out some super awkward bangs, and so I rarely wear them down.  Because of this, I've had to come up with some cute ways to hide a bobby pin without having the shortest bits of bang falling in my eyes!

This one is my personal favorite, other than just a French braid.  I like to call it the twisted tiara because it's raised up from the scalp and looks a bit like a crown.  And also because who doesn't love alliteration?

     {Step One}
Starting at your part, lift up two pieces of hair and do one twist.

     {Step Two}
Pick up another strand of hair from your hairline and add it to the front piece.

     {Step Three}
Twist that front piece and the new strand backwards and over the back piece.  Your back piece is now your front piece.

     {Step Four}
Repeat Step Two and Three over and over until you think you're done.

     {Step Five}
Grasp the two pieces and twist them together into one, and push them against your scalp so the French Twist you've just created gets a bit of volume.

     {Step Six}
Take a bobby pin.  Push it through the end of your twist from underneath and twist/push it in until it feels secure to you.  You can add more bobby pins throughout the "tiara" if you feel some places are loose.

Hit that baby with some hairspray and you've hidden your bangs away for the day!  This is great for summer, too, because it's fast (once you get the hang of it) and looks great with beachy waves.  Or with just plain ol' fresh from sleep lazy butt I just don't care hair.

Happy hair-days to you all.

Love,
Caro

Back to the Basics Pt. 1 - Mascara

Hey, everyone!  Emilyann here, and I'm starting a new series on the basics of makeup.  Sure it's fun to dress up and "put on your face" but if you don't know how to use the products you have, it could turn out to be a disaster.  I'm here to show you fool-proof ways to use your makeup staples.

Staple number one, mascara.

Mascara is usually one of the first pieces of makeup people buy.  Mascara is used to darken, lengthen, and volumize the lashes.  It can make white eyelashes appear dark, or tiny lashes appear longer.

However, mascara isn't magic.  It doesn't make your eyelashes grow.  In fact, it can often damage your lashes if you don't take good care of them like you would your hair or your skin.  Mascara should be taken off before bed every night, because if it's on too long, or while you toss and turn in bed, your eyelashes can break off or become twisted or pulled out.  It's important to take off any makeup before bed, but mascara especially.

What kind of mascara should you use?

There are many variables: whether you're fair or dark, you have blue eyes or green, whether your lashes are short, or stick straight out.

  • For natural, everyday wear, blonde, blue-eyed fair skinned girls should wear a dark, espresso brown colored mascara.  The brown will bring out the blue and the blonder lashes will appear darker without appearing fake.
  • Brunettes or darker skinned girls should wear a charcoal or a black color.  Black will go with every eye color.
  • If your eyelashes don't naturally curl, invest in a reliable eyelash curler. Then a curling mascara, such as Rimmel's Sexy Curves mascara.
  • If you have short eyelashes, use a good lengthening mascara.  These are super easy to find.  Try Covergirl Lashblast Length in the yellow bottle.
  • If you have long eyelashes that aren't voluminous, try a thickening mascara like Covergirl Original Lashblast in the orange bottle.
  • If you have both of these problems, don't be scared to layer mascara.  Start with the thinner consistency first- usually the lengthening mascara, and add a volumizing (thicker) mascara sparingly.  This will give you a good combination if used correctly.
Now, what to avoid with mascara.

The spider lashes.

Girls often mistake the spider lashes for volume and depth.  Sure we want our eyelashes to look like we put on three pairs of falsies.  But you can do that without making them look like tree trunks sticking out of your lashline.  Line your tightline with an eyeliner, then curl your lashes.  First apply a THIN coat of mascara to the backside of your eyelashes.  Remember, THIN.  This will give the illusion of thicker lashes.  Then apply mascara in a wiggling motion, separating the lashes and making sure they're thin and many.  The problem with the spidery lashes is that it clumps them together and causes them to look like you have four or five huge lashes.

Mascara smudges.

It happens to the best of us.  If you accidentally brush up against your skin as you're apply mascara, don't worry!  Just don't rub it with your fingers or touch it or try to remove it.  Wait until it's dried, then go in with a wet Q-tip and it will remove like it never happened.

Bad waterproof mascara.

Waterproof mascara won't ruin your lashes...if you use it in moderation.  Waterproof mascara has a different formula.  While protecting you from wetness, it also dries out your lashes and eventually will cause them to flake, or break off.  Only use waterproof mascara when hitting the pool or on a super sweaty day.

If you use mascara everyday... you need to take care of your lashes.
  • Coat them in Vaseline every night before bed to keep them long, strong, and healthy.
  • TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF BEFORE BED!
  • Give your eyelashes a break at least once a week, if possible.  They'll thank you in the end.
What's a makeup staple you're not sure what to do with?

Till next time!

How to have beautiful, long hair

Hey everyone!  It's Caroline.

I was emailed by my cousin with a very good question.  She says:

Do you have any tips on growing your hair long? I think I want to grow mine pretty long, at least long enough to put in a pony tail...

Why yes, I do have tips! :)

Last summer was a very, very hot summer.  My hair was pretty long; it reached past the middle of my back and was very wavy and textured.  I loved it!  And yet, out of the blue, I decided to cut it to a bit above my shoulders.

I mourned it.  At first I was practically intoxicated with the swingy-ness and the lightness, but then I realized I could barely do anything to it.  Now, I'm growing out my hair, and I must be doing something right because it's rapidly getting longer.

Here's my advice:

  • Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.  This sound counter-intuitive, but it helps your hair grow healthier.  Healthy hair is key!  Trimming often reduces the amount of split ends.  If you have a lot of split ends, your hair will break and will become fragile and fried.
  • Drink tons of water, take your vitamins, and eat healthily.  What you put into your body effects the outside.  I take Active Teen Health vitamins, and they clear my skin very well and make my hair softer and shinier.
  • Before you shower, take a boar-bristle brush or a round brush and gently brush through your roots.  This increases circulation, which accelerates hair growth.  Don't take the brush down through your ends though, because that can be damaging.
  • Along the same lines, massage your scalp.  Preferably do this before you shower, because it can increase oiliness because of your fingers.
  • Don't sleep with your hair in a rubberband, if possible.  This can cause breakage.  If you must, put it in a soft scrunchie.  The best way, though, is to leave it down while you sleep.
  • Use conditioner on your ends only, and shampoo with a vigorous massaging motion.
  • Give it a shape.  This is purely aesthetic... please don't let your hair be all one length and don't let it go un-trimmed.  At the very least, get one long layer so that it's not a blunt cut.  When your hair is one length and isn't kept up, it looks shabby.
  • Only use heat products when you absolutely must.  And if you do have to use heat, use thermal protection before you blow dry, and again before you use another heat tool.  I recommend Got 2b Guardian Angel or the slightly cheaper Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer.
  • Don't ever trim your own hair.  I beg you.
  • I know this sounds un-helpful, but TRY to relax.  Stress can cause slight to heavy hair loss.  So... grab a piece of chocolate and a bubble bath once in a while.
  • Don't shower with extremely hot water.  You can use hot water, just not too hot.  You don't want to damage your hair.
And that's all I've got for you today!  No pictures... Just some product references.
